Salcedo Samuel

Spain

Born in Barcelona in 1975, Samuel Salcedo studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona and at Manchester Metropolitan University, Department of Fine Arts. Originally trained as a painter, he ended up in sculpture having been a long-time assistant to the Catalan sculptor Jaume Plensa i Suñé. In his work, Salcedo deals with the sensitivities of human existence in a way that is as profound and poetic as it is at times humorous. While his sculpturally extremely precise and at the same time sensitively composed works appear powerful and auratic on the one hand, they always convey an impression of vulnerability, pain and timeless forlornness on the other. Like a mirror that has gone blind, the steel faces seem to look silently and introspectively with closed eyes, closing themselves off, as it were, from all that they see.

Quote

«I like to think that the faces I model are like a mirror.»
